Reading Without Looking

Using the Macroscope to Measure Public Attention in Media Archives You Cannot Open

Who gets the headlines, and who never appears? How long does an issue hold public attention before it fades? The answers sit in decades of Dutch media, yet most of that material is closed to research because of copyright restrictions.

In this hands-on session you will analyse one of these protected collections yourself, without ever seeing a single article. Using Blind SANE, a secure analysis environment developed by SURF, ODISSEI and CLARIAH, you send your analysis to data providers. Only the approved results come back. In small groups you choose a question about attention in Dutch media, such as the coverage of AI, migration or mental health, run it live and compare what you find.

We close with an open discussion among researchers, data holders and policymakers. What does it take to trust an analysis of data nobody can read? And which collections could this approach open up next? No technical experience is needed.
