Workshop: Key Enabling Methodologies (KEMs) and integral innovation

From knowledge to change

This workshop aims to inspire participants and introduce the use of Key Enabling Methodologies (KEMs) within an integrated innovation approach. It demonstrates why, in addition to (technological and social science) knowledge and insights, practical tools, methods, and the expertise and capacity to apply them are needed to translate knowledge into action and bring about real change. We move from the abstract to the concrete, and from research and knowledge to application and practice.

The session is organised in three parts. The first part introduces KEMs: what they are, why they exist, what purpose they serve, how they are used, and by whom. It also explores how KEM professionals collaborate with technological and social science professionals.

The second part presents the NWA-KEM project URRRRban. We will explain the project's ambitions, its relevance, and its intended impact. How do they view this project in the context of integrated innovation? Using this case, participants will gain insight into KEMs in practice, including their underlying principles and how they can be deployed in processes related to societal challenges.

The session concludes with a reflection on the key lessons and takeaways.

This workshop will be led by Mieke Dols (Manager research and program development at CLICKNL), Angela Rijnhart (Chief science officer at Municipality of Enschede), Martijn Arnoldus (Self-employed advisor and researcher, and Program Manager for KEMs at CLICKNL) & Michiel de Lange (Associate professor of new media studies at Utrecht University).
