Hamel (1970) writes music primarily for theatre and interdisciplinary performances. He has composed two operas and various music theatre productions for national theatre companies as well as for the Holland Festival. He has published six collections of poetry, which have won numerous awards. In 2025, his debut work of fiction, Het zwarte raam, was published.
Together with animation artist Demian Albers, he creates works for virtual reality as a scriptwriter and composer. As a professor at Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam, he conducted research into future scenarios for the classical music sector and also led an extensive study into listening training through games.
At Utrecht University, he is working on a project on creative writing aimed at enriching the school subject of Dutch. Finally, he is collaborating with director Arlon Luijten on the BURO2040 project, a transdisciplinary hub that uses serious games to facilitate and accelerate transitions.
