This group conducts research into the health applications of music, using brain and behavioural measurements in both healthy individuals and those with brain disorders. This research focuses on human responses to music and examines how music can be used to promote wellbeing and recovery, with a particular emphasis on the potential use of technology.
Consequently, this research is conducted on an interdisciplinary basis, in collaboration with clinical partners and technical researchers both in the Netherlands and abroad. In addition, Schaefer teaches courses in both (neuro)psychology and music cognition, in Leiden as well as at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
Schaefer also has extensive experience in science communication for both general and specialist audiences, ranging from ‘Klokhuis’ and the Amsterdam Dance Event to the organisation of festivals, as well as in co-creation and citizen science, including in collaboration with the Citizen Science Lab in Leiden.
