Programme 2026
NWO SHIFT (Social Sciences and Humanities for Innovative and Fair Transformations) is a new conference series organised by NWO and the SSH-council. This first edition focuses on the theme Attention: Shaping Society in Uncertain Times, bringing together researchers, policymakers, professionals and societal partners to explore one of the defining challenges of our age.
The programme is divided into five time slots. In each time slot, you can choose from a ‘Conversation’ between two speakers, an ‘Insight’ session comprising two separate presentations, or a workshop. An exhibition will be open throughout the whole day.

Three interconnected themes
In a world of constant information flows, digital technologies and competing demands on our time, attention has become a precious and contested resource. How does attention shape the way we think, act and make decisions? Who influences what receives attention and what remains unseen? And what does this mean for the future of our societies?
- Attention and the Self explores the impact of attention on individuals, identities and wellbeing. How do digital environments, information overload and emerging technologies influence the way we focus, connect and experience the world?
- Attention and Power examines who shapes public attention and why it matters. From algorithms and media platforms to political agendas and economic interests, this theme looks at the forces that direct collective attention and their implications for democracy, knowledge and public debate.
- Attention and Society focuses on the broader societal consequences of attention dynamics. How does attention affect social cohesion, trust, culture, public decision-making and our ability to address major societal challenges?
Through inspiring keynotes, engaging discussions and opportunities for dialogue across disciplines, NWO SHIFT will offer fresh perspectives on the role of attention in an increasingly complex world. Expect new insights, thought-provoking conversations and opportunities to connect with people working across the social sciences, humanities, policy and practice.
